Somewhere in the frozen landscapes of Atlas de los lugares que no existen —Atlas of Places That Don’t Exist— icebergs are more than mountains of ice. They can become stages, balconies, floating islands and tiny theatres beneath the moon.
“Ice Auditorium” is a fantasy illustration from my book Atlas de los lugares que no existen, published by Mosquito Books in Barcelona in 2017. This illustrated book invites readers to travel through impossible maps, imaginary cities and dreamlike worlds.
In this penguin art print, a colony of penguins gathers on floating sheets of ice to attend a very special concert. Some play the harp, double bass, trumpet and drum, while others listen from the natural tiers of a towering iceberg, as though the polar landscape had transformed for one night into a secret auditorium.
The sea is filled with small white islands, delicate lines of water, curious groups of penguins and tiny details that invite you to look more closely. Everything seems to happen in silence, yet the scene feels full of music.
